For complete bikes, we will help you to tailor the specification to suit, and will provide you with a quote for approval before going ahead with the build. There's no "standard specification" with "X" groupset or "Y" for a Roberts, it's up to you. For many of our models we like to mix and match drivetrain components, particularly on drop-bar touring bikes.
Based on many years’ experience of assembling bikes and collecting feedback from riders, we don’t recommend cutting corners with your choice of components, and nor do our customers.
When you’re ready for a fully custom frame, you should already have enough experience to know a bit about what works for you. You’ll tell us what you want, if you need us to suggest appropriate components to round it all out, we’ll fill in the gaps - or we can provide a complete specification, based on your needs.
We want your bike to be there for you when you need it – so we’re sure you’ll agree it’s worth a little bit extra up front to have that peace of mind.
Where possible, 700c wheels (the largest standard diameter) are used for most of our models to give a greater range of tyre options and lower rolling resistance. Recently, however, manufacturers have expanded their 26" (MTB) tyre range to the point where these will be specified to capitalise on the extra strength, comfort and longevity that these wheels can provide. We’ve even started building 29ers at customers’ request.
We’ve ample experience of building bikes using Rohloff 14-speed internal hub gears and we’ve started to build bikes using the latest Shimano Alfine 11-speed hub gears along with the Gates Carbon Belt Drive system (which requires a special splitter on the drive-side seat stay).
We can also incorporate S&S torque couplings into our frames, enabling any of our bikes to be split into two halves and packed into a 26"x 26"x 10" case. Such bikes are a pleasure to take travelling and the advantage over other designs of folding/ travelling bike is that there is no compromise in performance or comfort - it's your bike, built for you.
When necessary, or by special request, we can also create custom steel stems and racks.
